and throw down another few hundred bucks to get ~5C - 10C cooler? not worth it lol

Yeah plus sometimes I worry about leaking, I hear water and electricity don't get along that well.

Are you in a rush to get your computer? If not then wait till the holidays.
AMD is suppose to release their Flagship 6000 series soon and that should drive down the price of all other cards.

Also, the 'Tock' should be approaching soon from Intel. i3/i5/i7 series were all just 'Ticks' in Intel's long-term plan. Expect new 32nm architecture is due out soon and it will make even the i7's look weak.

But if your getting one soon, invest in an intel cpu, and a mobo with with lots of room for RAM and expansion cards. You can get a decent $200 mobo now that supports usb3, i7 and next gen cpu's (for you future proof upgrades), crossfire or crossfireX.

The new i9's or whatever they will be called will only support i7 sockets, not i3 or i5

Yeah, but I'm going high-end on the GPU. I want the 6870, and 2 of them are the same price as one GTX 480, and when in crossfire they outperform the 480 by a huge margin.

oh and king, I love modular psu's. won't have tons of wires I'm not using just laying around.

Only modification I made was I put that $40 case back in, and put a 4gb (2 x 2gb) ram set in instead of the 6gb. 4 should be enough for now..I can always buy another set like that later on and have 8gb total. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220481

total after shipping and tax would be $866.87 after tossing in a couple SATA cables and thermal paste. also found a site that has newegg promo codes so once I go to buy (probably next week) i'll use them and get a few dollars chopped off the total

Have you considered the cost of running 2 GPU's instead of 1? If you double up on the Crossfire/SLI/duel, "in terms of extrapolated equal performance", then wouldn't power consumption be lower with 2 480GTX, rather than 4 ATI 6870?

yes, but going above dual crossfire/SLI (tri/quad), there really isn't too much of a performance boost, so it's a waste of money to go above that. This mobo has 2 PCIe 2.0 x16 slots so that's all I'll need for a dual-crossfire 6870. And yes I have considered the cost, I can buy two 6870's for the price of one GTX 480, and run them with less power consumption and lower temps than if I went with SLI GTX 480. I've never seen why you would need to run tri/quad SLI/Crossfire..2 high-end cards can run about anything in mid to high settings depending on the resolution, and I only have a 1440 x 900 monitor.

Keyword: "supposed." Nothing ever gets released when it's supposed to; it always gets pushed back for some reason, if I wait for the holidays, then something else will be announced and I'll be waiting for that, etc. It's a never-ending cycle. There is no real "ideal time" to buy a computer since it's constantly changing. You just gotta make a decision and go with it.

    *UPDATE*

Talked with my mom this morning and we came to an agreement. I payed off the laptop in full today, so we agreed that if she went ahead and ordered the build with her Bill Me Later account, I'd pay it off in increments with each paycheck, and if I do get the scholarship money next semester, I'll use that to pay off whatever's left. It takes a few days for her BML account to be able to make purchases again, so next week is the earliest I'd get it, and it's actually gonna happen this time. :icon_mrgreen:

Yeah I think 8 gigs is nice if you have it, but isn't really necessary yet.

Imo, save yourself the $$ and just get 4gb. Not overkill, and not too little.

Invest in a one stick 4GB, that way when its cheaper in the future, you can buy more at much cost and max out your RAM (otherwise you'd eventually have to throw out those 1 and 2gb sticks to get the full 16GB or 24GB depending on if you get 4 DIMM or 6DIMM mobo) :icon_angel:

10K rpm hdd are a waste of money now a days. Sure they faster, but they wont make an overwhelming performance difference if you have a well equiped rig. Cheap out on a $80 1TB 7200rpm drive now and then upgrade in '3 or 5' years whenever SSD actually reduce in price :icon_angel:

ok sounds good, which one of these should I get? (patriot doesn't have any 4gb sticks with heat spreaders, idk if it's necessary or not)

probably early in the week..maybe tuesday or wednesday. That promo will chop a good bit off the card, thanks :icon_happy:

That's like major overkill right now..lol..don't need more than 4 atm, might get another 4gb stick or a 2gb stick in a little while, if I need it.

Since you are building and leaving upgrade room, go with 4GB RAM and get a nicer processor (Intel!)
