DonJuan wrote:No, your current HDD will definitely work but if your trying to get that much performance out of your system with a new CPU (specifically the i9) and some kick butt GPU's, you should also get a kick butt SSD. You'll be bottlenecking yourself with overall system performance by using a standard SATA HDD.

umm i know this is going to sound stupid, but what it a solid state drive and what's the difference between that and a regular hard drive?

A Solid State Drive is like a giant Flash drive. No moving mechanical parts like a typical harddrive. Therefore much faster data read and write rates...
Only Problem it costs about $200 for a 80Gb or 120Gb drive. For that same price you could get a 2Tb standard drive.

OCZ to release 1TB SSD this month: For $2200 !!!
    OR
    Seagate Barracuda (ST31500341AS) 7200.11 SATA 3.0Gb/s 1.5TB 1500GB 32MB Cache (OEM) For $132.99 (Cdn)

So it's better to use a SSD with your OS and programs on it and keep everything else on a standard drive?

In the respect of performance, yes. Like Slevin said, you get amazing read/write times on those things. Saw a guy who had an i7 build with a good SSD who could turn his computer on and from power up to sitting at the desktop was like 7 seconds.

Yes, but it may be best to wait a few years to get a SSD. In 2 or 3 years a 1Tb SSD would drop down to a few 100 dollars. If your looking at upgrading now, use a 1Tb drive or so for now and when ssd's become cheap reformat your old drive to be a media drive (backing up all you data of course to another drive, ie: external drive)
SSD is definitely the future, but isnt really ready for consumer use...You'd fill up a SSD drive very fast now.

    Re: Left 4 Dead 2

I'm not saying he should get a 1 TB SSD, I'm just saying, if he's going to throw that much money out to a high-end CPU and two high-end GPU's, he might as well throw out an extra $250 on a 60 GB SSD to load his OS and programs on to so that he's not bottle-necking himself with a 7200 RPM HDD.

Side note: I did some research and I was wrong before by saying that the Intel Q6600 in my mother-in-laws desktop out performs the AMD 9850 Black that I have in my desktop at home. The Q6600 has a factory clock speed of just 2.4 Ghz per core/9850 2.5 Ghz (I've got mine stably OC'd at 3.0 Ghz per core). The Q6600 uses a 1066 Mhz FSB/9850 uses 4000 Mhz HyperTransport. (This is the only edge the Q6600 has) Q6600 has a 8 Mb L2 cache and no L3/9850 has 2 Mb L2 and L3 cache.

The biggest difference between the two is OC'ing capabilities. The Q6600 uses a very low clock multiplier at the stock speeds (6x multiplier I believe), making it very easy to OC without having to raise your core voltage by much. Unfortunately the computer the Q6600 is in is a Dell, which means BIOS is locked down like Ft. Knox. If I threw in an after-market MoBo I could do a lot with this thing. Either way, my biggest hindrance with playing L4D2 on here still remains at the crappy GeForce 8300 GS GPU. I did manage to get it playing smoothly today, but only at the lowest video settings and a 800x600 resolution, that just terribly takes away from the entire gaming experience. I guess I'll probably be waiting until I return to my house and am able to play on my desktop, which won't be until Nov 27th. *Sigh* :icon_cry2:

Well he could pay a little more and get a Raptor running at 10k. :)

I guess it mostly depends on what your doing, but the SSD, for normal read/write operations still takes the cake I think. A VelociRaptor would be the best choice I guess after doing a little research, which you can get for around $200 for a 300 Gb drive.

Check this out for a little more info: http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/IDE/SSD_vs_VelociRaptor_vs_Raptor/SSD_vs_VelociRaptor_Raptor.html

My friend got it for 360, it looks pretty sweet...although it does take getting use to with a controller.

Excellent idea t3. Beats using a 7200 rpm any day. And you pay more but not nearly as much as an SSD. I have two WD Raptor drives and you would notice the faster pace from a 7200 rpm drive. Drives need to be improved.. I mean putting 5400 rpm drives into laptops nowadays STILL.... seems crazy to me. And what happened to using 7200 rpm drives in a laptop.. I found one on ebay.. seems as tho they are rare or something.
