Just Mentioning

I'm gonna be visiting my great-grandma today, she just turned 97 this past friday! Yeah, she was born the day after World War 1 started in Europe (long before it in the US), she was born in 1914... that is OLD. Cool thing is her mom also lived to be 97; between just 2 generations they span almost 200 years of history, amazing .

Just a little time differences, she grew up as 1 of 12 (or was it 14?) kids, riding in a horse and buggy long before they were cars anywhere around their small town in North Carolina, owned a hardware/appliance store until Lowe's came into town and forced them out of business, she was old enough during the great depression to remember it well (not many can legitimately say that any more), the list goes on and on.

man I can't imagine seeing that much change over 97 years... epic... imagine what our kids are gonna see in their lifetimes...crazy

It was really cool to hang out and listen to her stories. stuff like living on a dairy farm with her husband and his twin, they had 6 dairy cows and they'd take the milk to town to sell it and that's all they needed to do to get by (of course gardening etc but I'm talking how they made money). 6 cows may bring in enough money to feed 1 person today, only maybe.

She's just a little old southern lady who has never been 5 foot tall but doesn't use a walker, cane or any walking aid or wheel chair at 97! She drove until 90 something when she got t-boned by some guy who ran a red light, then she gave up her license cause she didn't feel safe even though dmv said she passed every test (she only drove around her hometown which is still small). Around the same age when she got a blood test done, the doc seriously looked at her and said the test looked like a 55 year old's blood cause she was in such good shape. Oh and she did aerobics at her church until she moved into the assisted living home (since nobody could be around her to take care of her in case of emergency at home), yeah at 90+ she was still doing aerobics a day or two a week and would play scrabble against herself nightly.

Its really interesting how life can be though. She is in such good shape and runs circles around any one close to her age yet she's outlived her daughter, my grandma. She had numerous health issues, overweight, spine conditions, type 2 diabetic, medicine imbalance constantly for the last few years of her life, couldn't have surgery because of the risks in order to fix her spine condition taking away feeling in her legs.

It would be cool if she lives to be 100 and all but when it all boils down, she just wants to have family and she is happy with that (and boooooy she has plent of descendents (30+ easily). She knows that at any point God may take her away but I know she is just one really cool woman.
