    Knowledge of Speakers?

Hello every one! Does anyone know anything about speakers here?
I want to get something that makes a lot of boom to around 200 USD. I will need an Amplifier as well, but dont take that into the total cost. I will only be needing an element, not an enitre box. I will be building the box myself to save money. I dont need any 5.1 surround or anything, but something that just makes a lot of quality sound, and with a good amount of bass. So if anyone knows how and where to buy a speaker, please give me a heads up :)

What's the application? Car, home stereo, computer, band, theater? I'm assuming you mean car. I'll have to look back over that stuff, I used to know a lot about them, setup my own system etc but haven't done much recently.

It is for home use basically, but I might eventually swap it in to a car. I know you can use the car speakers as a home speaker, cuz I have some of them already. I will not be using a car amplifier, but one of them u have in ur living room u know :P . Help ALOT appreciated :)

    Re: Knowledge of Speakers?

are you just talking about getting a subwoofer? or do you need tweeters and supertweeters too? I guess the third question I have is about how many... do you want to have a single sub setup or dual subs (if you just mean subs)?

When I've gotten speakers before, http://www.crutchfield.com/ has been really useful. They provide lifetime support normally too. Another site I've used since they may have stuff cheaper is http://www.sonicelectronix.com/ but they don't have the same support. A lot of the reviews from Crutchfield are very helpful and actually are worth something. I'm not sure about those two websites for ordering though since you are in Norway.

A big factor in choosing a sub is the amplifier powering it though. I know you said to not factor it into cost, does that mean you already have one? If so, which model is it (so we can match a sub to it). If the amp has more power than the sub is rated, you'll probably blow the sub pretty quickly. If the sub can handle way more power than the amp is pushing, you won't reach full sound and the sub will sound punny. If you don't already have an amp then the amp should just be matched to the sub while considering the cost the entire time (in general, the higher wattage the sub is rated for, the more expensive the amplifier is going to be to power it). The type of amp also matters if you were going to try to throw two subs side-by-side or if just using a single sub.

Think Imma head with one sub for now, and maybe two tweeters or so.. Im out for the boom, ya know ;)
I think the one I have is a Yamaha RX-V650 with a NAD Stereo Amplifier 3020i Running the current Woofer. Do you think that will get some good sound, or will I be needing a New one?

    Re: Knowledge of Speakers?

Not all speakers are interchangeable, you have to look at what Ohm the speaker is. The ohm of the speaker determines whether it is a home, or car speaker. You could damage your amp/receiver by using speakers with the wrong Ohm.

    Power Sources/Impedance:
In home/commercial amplifiers, they have a mains voltage of at least 120 volts with which to work (most actually reduce the voltage with the power transformer). This means that they can use high impedance speakers and still produce high power. Using low impedance (less than 8 ohms) speakers with home audio equipment may well cause the output transistors to fail. Home equipment is designed for high voltage, low current output. Most car audio equipment is designed to operate into lower impedance loads (4 ohms or less).

If you are looking for a home theater subwoofer, then I suggest BIC America, they are inexpensive, and hit hard:

If you are on a really tight budget, try this place:

    http://www.parts-express.com/

Lots of reviews, and very low prices.

Check crutchfield like TarHeel suggested. They've been around for decades and I buy all my audio equipment from them.

Crutchfield is good, but doesn't usually have the lowest prices. I have ordered from them, but usually only when they have the B1G1 promos. If you are unsure if a website is reputable or not, check ResellerRatings.com. Anything at 6.5 or above is very good. Anything at 4-6 is average to good. Best Buy and Frys are rated at like 2, a lot of people dislike them...lol. I have posted my setup on here before, but I am a huge fan of home theater:

I have upgraded to the Epson 8700UB projector, and I have removed the BR player, HD DVD player, PS3 (moved to bedroom) and opted for a HTPC instead. This is my HTPC:

Yep, exactly what I did when I ordered from them. They are definitely the high end audio company for general purchasing but their lifetime support is outstanding as well as their knowledge base. I'm not sure what the best low price companies are for home audio but searching review websites for info is a must. I always try to confirm with 2 or 3 review websites about the quality of service from a company and stuff like shipping, timeliness and ease of their return policy for defective items before I make a purchase.

Oh, and I'm gone till Sunday after this morning so i won't be able to help for a few days.

Yeah, Amazon is usually lower than Crutchfield. As long as it ships from Amazon, you're covered. Ebay is a good place too, just make sure the seller has a good rating. I usually never order from anyone with less than a 96% rating. Just Google for the best price of the model number, then check the ratings on the seller.
