You could potentially still upgrade, but that would be pointless since your 'older' mobo most likely doesnt support anymore than 2gb RAM, a single AGP or PCIe slot.

Getting a brand new or last years model mobo will allow you to make countless upgrades down the road if you ever want to, plus support most of the latest technologies to give you decent performance for todays and tomorrows games.
