Split screen on PC

I think PC's need split-screen multiplayer capability. I'm the only person [I know of] in a 30 mile radius with a powerful gaming PC, so how are my friends supposed to play with me? Luckily my wife has a PC and on our LAN, but that means I have to buy two copies of any game we... Wait, maybe that's why they haven't bothered with split-screen.

Really though, I think it's a good idea.

I think the main reason it hasnt been impleneted is that most pc gamers are all sitting at their desk with small screens(24" or less in most setups i believe). This just makes split screen impractical. It works on consles because on consoles most people are in living rooms with large televisions, or atleast larger than most computer monitors.

You got one mouse, one keyboard on pc. 'Nuff said.

Larger screens are getting cheaper and cheaper. If you have a gaming PC, more than likely you have a larger screen. I've played Halo on a console just fine split screen at 720p. I would imagine a monitor with 1080p would be fine for split screen.

I've noticed more and more PC games are being released lately with automatic configuration of my Xbox controller. Borderlands for example required no configuration at all; all buttons were just mapped and ready. Most friends want to use a controller anyway, so why not?

Also, what about dual monitor setups? I could see co-op multiplayer on one PC with two monitors. That would be pretty sweet.

They used to do it a lot in the 90's but then the games got to rigorous for the pc to handle it. I played a lot of need for speed games and it was present since '95 till around 2001 for split screen 2 player racing (both 1v1 and 1v1vComputer Racers), it of course required using keyboard for 1, and gamepad/joystick for the other. Resolution wasn't an issue since most CRT's were 1024x768 or less and 15" or less when it started.

But for the game designer, how would that bring them more money? The internet (or LAN) connection method of multiplayer was great in their eyes.

This would be amazing if game makers implement this..

I currently have 2 monitors attached to my computer. I found a guide that allowed me and my friend to simultaneously play portal 2 co-op on the same computer (because I don't have online *Cough *Cough) I used the mouse and keyboard while he used a 360 controller.. He would be playing on one screen while I play on the other...it was epic.

That's exactly the point. By not designing it, it brings more money in because people have to buy 2 copies. For xbox/PS3, it is different. A household will typically have 1 xbox/ps3 .. Game makers make more money because if siblings or friend want to play it, they can too. BF3 > MW3... But when I go to my friend's house, we play MW3 because it allows us to play together on his xbox but BF3 only allows us to play 1 person at a time. That is partially why COD does well..
