**HL2 WEDNESDAY**

I couldn't run the game... the source engine update has ruined the game for me. I told oscar if he wanted to organize something for you HL2DM guys then it's going to be up to him.. because several of us just couldn't run HL2DM any more.

There has to be another issue. I think the main issue tonight was Medieval Dragon, he causes mega-lag whenever he plays. It always works to his benefit too, which makes me suspicious. It just takes a little while to get used to the new engine, but I usually never have any issues PC wise. Now that I have played on it a while, I am fine with it. Is it as good as before...no. Is it playable...yes. It does not seem to have effected players like ME, and Proctor, they still kick much a$$.

Oscar can count on my support for anything(help).

Well that person was definitely lagging badly but the thing that finally made me leave is when you were right in front of me not 12" away and I shot you 3 times in the chest with the 357 and you never died. So, yes it's playable for some rigs, but there is something that is causing problems for many people. I don't know if it's a particular chipset, dual core vs quad core, or what, but it wasn't playable for me.

That happened to me a few times, but I kept playing for a bit and it evened out and worked fine for me. What REALLY upsets me is if you very quickly cook and shoot a nade, it sometimes freezes in midair and blows up next to you and kills you

The game is already 7 years old.. may it rest in peace. It was one of my favorite games of all time, but Valve's, I guess you have to call it 'greed', has ended it. It was already dying a slow death, but they sped it up in their haste to add Mac gamers to their pocketbook. But I wonder, was changing the engine to support Mac really a cash cow? I doubt it. So really all they did was tarnish their name to many HL2DM gamers who were perfectly happy until that ill fated 'update'.

I feel bad for those who can't afford a computer update to play newer games, I only hope for the sake of those people, they aren't affected by Valves crappy patch.

and actually, techgage did some mac testing with steam using Portal, and it actually performs worse on a mac than a pc with identical specs. they tested some other games out and same results. performs worse.

It's because Mac OS X uses OpenGL, not DirectX. All games nowadays are optimized to use DirectX.

At the modest resolution of 1280x800, the PC version had 52% more FPS on average, and at 2560x1600, the difference was even stronger... 82%. The performance the Mac did see though is far from poor, but unfortunately, Portal isn't exactly a heavyweight in today's scheme of gaming. To picture something like Crysis, Modern Warfare 2 or even F.E.A.R. 2 on the same machine is a little questionable. For what it's worth, if the Steam client was available for Linux today, the performance differences would likely be identical, as Linux also relies on OpenGL and virtually the same overall base kernel (Unix is at each OS' core).

If you've ever played a game in both DirectX and OpenGL modes, chances are you noticed some subtle differences, and in the case of Portal for the Mac, this case is no different. On the Mac version, the graphics as a whole are a little foggier and lack the total definition of the PC version. It certainly doesn't affect the gameplay, but as the PC version clearly looks superior, hopefully we'll be able to see the Mac version equal up at some point down the road.

I don't see why they have to do all that, 95% of gamers are PC gamers.
