For me the only fact is this...

The only time I used an ATI card it burned up within the year. I mean actually burned. No Nvidia card I've ever used before or after that has done that. So, if you are ever lost in the woods in the winter time and you have a pack of ATI cards, never fear, you'll be able to keep warm without problem.. and that's a fact.

Now for the real truth, they go back and forth but Nvidia is considered superior more often than ATI. I will post this head to head, but of course you can find others stating the opposite, it's only that this particular article is the most recent I found:

True. AMD beats NVIVIA in some ways, and in others it's vice versa. It's whatever your preference is.

In DX9/10 AMD wins, but MOST DX11, and ANYTHING that has to do with graphics editing, Nvidia wins.
I've even had someone that worked for AMD on Radeon Cards tell me to Buy Nvidia Cards..

And I totally Agree with T on this, I've had a few radeon cards fail on my before too.
But, Nvidia has THE FASTEST single GPU card on the market right now...The 5970 is 2 GPUs, so you have to compare that to 2x580s in SLI which is unmatched.
So, the only real way to compare this is a GTX580 vs a 6970 which is the fastest single card, but Nvidia still wins.
Nvidia cards cost more, but you pay for quality. but the GTX 460 right now is really cheap...its like $110 for it.

Sometimes measuring the bottleneck can be interpreted in so many ways. The only Thing ATI can render better then Nvidia is BSoD.

JUST LOOK AT BENCHMARKS! Crimson even said himself that the 580 is as powerful as the 5970. But it depends on the games/settings but that isn't legit because you are comparing 2 GPUs to One!, then look at my preivious link for the "Nvidia is better for graphics editing"
That guy I was mentioning actually does know his stuff, he's worked on Phenom II Chips and lots of other stuff, just pm me on steam and ill show you what he said to me.. Im only having a heated discussion (no, its not an argument yet) about this because you claimed it was a fact. but it is only an opinion, what is a fact is that the 580 is the most powerful single chip gaming GPU on the market. Ill agree AMD has cheaper prices, but Nvidia has better stuff. Just look at how many AMD GPUs burn out...I recall ME,flynn, T and possibly earthman say that they've had ATI cards die on them.

    lol. yes it is.

    http://techgage.com/article/amd_radeon_hd_6950_hd_6970_2gb/4

Go through each benchmark. The 5970 beats the 6970 in EVERY single benchmark, only being bested by either the GTX 580, or one of the 6800 models in CrossFireX. Just because it's their newest card doesn't mean it's the best. the 5970 has TWO graphics processing cores. That's why it's so sickly powerful, whereas the 6970 still only has a single GPU.

The 580 is not better than the 5970, the difference is the perfomance when it's time to play some games. If you can't use a card anymore that doesn't mean the problem is with the card it could be with you(overdrive), your com.(mobo, psu). :)

actually what ME said there is fact, NVIDIA DOES have the fastest single GPU card out there right now, that's been proven time and time again with benchmark testing. That's not a matter of preference there.

Umm, read any benchmark out there. the 580 is about on par with the 5970. Kudos to NVIDIA for making a single GPU card that competes with a dual. And that's coming from an AMD fan.

Re: Need help with bying a GFX card...

I'm gonna throw my 2 cents in here.

First of you can't judge a company's products from past products anymore when it comes to a computer tech company such as AMD/ATI, Intel or nvidia. the technology and company structure change very fast. but i'll be honest i'm a AMD nut. i prefer to shell my money to a company that is working in competition to a sniveling company such as intel and nvidia who find it necessary to pay out extra cash to prevent the sale of the competition products (intel) or to re-badge old product under a new name to get more money out of it and play games with their drivers to make it seem there cards run faster (nvidia). now it is true that nvidia high end cards are faster but by little and at the same time use a lot more power and put out a lot more heat in order to do so. http://techgage.com/article/amd_radeon_ ... 970_2gb/11

ATI cards are much more energy efficient and are able to run fast if not faster without using more power then a air conditioner. as for clock speeds that's another thing intel shoved down are throat with the Pentium 4 processors. higher clocks do not mean its faster. the GPU's architecture does. so when selecting a graphics card you have to around at multiple benchmarks cause some sites like to pad their results. then move to what resolution you play at, the higher the res the more on-board memory you will need (512gb-1gb is plenty) and again look at how much power that card is going to use and how big your power supply is. its good practice to get a PSU that has the ability to put out twice the amount of power you will be using on a regular bases. a PSU working at 50% load for 100% of the time will last twice as long as a PSU working at 100% load 100% of them time (stay away from multi railed PSU!) just my opinion but i think a HD6850 is perfect for your application. :icon_mrgreen:
