Ok so im glad its going to be free with rebate. Got Kaspersky from Newegg installed it,got all the updates. Checked all the settings to make sure they were set. Firewalls enabled, said system was secure. An hour later the wife said she was kicked from the internet, she was on facebook. Saw something new on her computer it was called "E-Set Anti-Virus 2011" Knew right away it was not suppose to be there. So I ran Kaspersky and it found the infection and got rid of it (so it said it did). Rebooted computer and guess what....virus still there. 45 minutes later after I re-formatted computer, good so far. First thing I did when I was able to get back on internet was installed one of my favorite programs....Malware Bytes. I think I will install Avast Home Edition..its free and I never had a problem with it. Think Ill send Kaspersky a "friendly letter".

I think any of the free stuff is better than Kaspersky garbage. I sent them off a "nice e-mail" and had a live chat session with one of there people also. Told him that the fake virus scan program I got probably worked better than there stuff.

I'm definitely no expert on viruses but from what I understand from past research trying to find the best security software is that no one anti-virus will catch them all. I used to run them against each other and they would always find something the other one missed, were it a virus, spyware, malware or keyloggers.
Kapersky's is one of the best out there but will not get everything. It's also used by many other anti-virus programs of different names as there core program.
The advise I got in the research was to find a set of them that will catch each others shortcomings and then provide the best package. They could all be free, or not. Sometimes you can use a trial version of something which will locate spyware or malware on your system but won't remove them until you buy the software, but you can manually remove the offensive stuff by following the paths shown, usually directing you into your registry.
Also Facebook has known security issue's and by logging in you may be inadvertently accepting any content that gets downloaded.
I was warned by my investment newsletters of the issue's and to not be involved with Facebook, so I pulled my account with them. Anyway that's my rant...

Look, I'm not Microsoft fanboy, but since I put the FREE security essentials on my system, I've had no problems. I've used Kaspersky in the past, and then AVG Free, Security Essentials seems to be just as good or better than either of them.

We've had this anti-virus talk before on this forum and as per your recommendation I downloaded MSE and installed it on my gaming computer when my other program needed to be repurchased and have had no issue's ever, and it's free.

by ME.
MSE does the job, but Eset Nod32 is THE BEST, Trend Micro is the 2nd best, symantec/Norton is good except it takes a LOT of system resources..

I don't even have to say because you all already know that for me there is only two good anti-viruses AVG and security essentials so T. and King are. if you want to spend money go buy one

but those two are free

I still respect Kasperksy ... inspite of your incident. What you got infected with smells a lot like a variant of the XP ANTIVIRUS piece of #@%$%#$.
I agree with Me (no, not me, but TKC ME -- will that ever sound right ?) in that Eset's NOD32 is has done well by me, maynard !
Kaspersky Pure (enhanced version of KIS) has Home Network Control, where DAD (usualy the smart one in the house

) can configure and run scans without having to plop his butt in another chair. Plus KIS and higher use sandboxing technology which I think really makes a difference. If you had used that technology you prob. wouldn't be sore right now ? ? ? You did say you got KIS not KAV right ?

yeah some virus are able to mask themselves as something else but a recomendation is make sure you have the antibanner on because alot of virus are enbedded in ad banners and once you even just mouse over it can activate it, got a nasty worm once from a banner before kaspersky.

If you just got the computer, would a clean install not be an option?
I run MSE and Malwarebytes together.

Yeppers T3 I did reformat the computer when she got the E-SET virus, then the next day she got the PC Windows Defender virus. Ran Malwarebytes and that showed no infections. I updated all of the Microsoft Updates, loaded Internet Explorer 9, then installed Mozilla Firefox and told her to just use Mozilla Firefox and see what happens.
