    Computer Buying Help

Might have to get new computer really soon. :icon_teeth: We found a good sale at Dell (I think). How do these specs sound?

    Processor: i5-560 (3.20 GHz)(
    Memory: 8GB DDR3
    HDD: 1 TB
    Graphics: ATi Radeon HD 5450
Dual 16x DVD +/- w/ double layer write
    THX sound card
(Also has Microsoft Office software added)
    Free shipping

Grand total: $998 +tax (About $400 off normal)

I know its not a lot, but my dad wants to stay mainstream to keep it easy. We arent looking for a hypercomputer lol.

Sometimes measuring the bottleneck can be interpreted in so many ways. The only Thing ATI can render better then Nvidia is BSoD.

    Re: Computer Buying Help

If you want to get the most out of $1000...
Don't go to Dell or any store. They give you a ***** very basic motherboard that will give you those features listed and thats it leaving you no opportunity to upgrade.
4 Dimm slots maybe 8gb is the max ram you can ever get
A single pcie slot for the graphics
Saying THX certified probably means onboard sound.

Set a budget, say $1000 - 1200 and shop for a Computer store (retail)

Anyone know a store similar to Canada Computers in the US?
Its the best place to buy a custom 'individual component' PC they have all major brands of cpu, graphics, cd/dvd drives, hdd, cases, etc plus many OEM products so you can get them cheap.
All come with 1 year Store warranty plus 3 to 5 year manufacturers warranties.

I say Retail store because plenty of times you have to rely on UPS or some idiots to deliver your computer from Newegg.com or Tigerdirect.com.
I know Tigerdirect has outlet stores but there prob in major US cities.

i have ordered over $45000 worth of stuff from newegg with no shipping error or defunct box
never not a single problem i get packages on a daily basis from them they are excellent shippers.
if you order from newegg you can trust that your package will arrive safely.
same with dell i order a specific monitor from them all the time same thing no error.
the picture of the monitor is on the box and still no shipping problems or defunct boxes.
i have also ordered this moniotr from there refurbished warehouse on several occasions with no problems.

Used to. It was called CompUSA and it was THE BEST computer superstore out there, but they went out of business :icon_sad: :icon_holdingtears:

Other than that I'm not really sure, might have to just look around for come random computer stores and check out their prices.

CompUSA didn't go out of business, they were bought out by TigerDirect who promptly shut down the majority of the stores.

They had a huge one in my town.

Btw, my sister is in law school and can get us MS Office for like $20. That will knock the price down to $879. :icon_teeth:

I have a Quad, not an i, but I went from 4GB to 6GB, and let me tell you it was not worth the $100. I returned the memory, and got my money back. Maybe an i5 is different, but the cost vs. performance was not worth it in my case.
