Horror stories for each, indeed .. I agree with that.

Virus / Malware threads always bring out lots of opinions.
Few things that help me:
1. Have some sort of sandboxing or virtual technology working for you. Kaspersky IS and PURE are one of the few that I know have it. It you don't have either of those, a lot of people use SandboxIE .. small install.. really helps. As long as you understand the concept, most people do fine with it and are a lot harder to infect.
2. Like anything, having research to back up the spew your preaching always makes your opinion look more informed. I like to visit sites such as:
http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/latest_comparative/indexhttp://www.av-test.org/http://www.av-comparatives.org/There are plenty of test/comparitive sites out there, some are $$ biast (PC Magazine), some are new, so watch out .. Not everthing you read is true

(Including what I'm saying ??

.. The sites I listed have all been around for a loooong time (there is a reason for that ... ).
3. People are creatures of habbit. Simply removing the virus/malware off the machine (possibly wiping the hard disk) and then hearing that person got infected again (possibly with the same virus) doesn't surprise me. They go right back to the same website that got them infected in the first place, not knowing that even E-bay listings can have malware in them, etc .... Think about it, many times computers get taken in and the customer is told, ya your infected, but when asked what EXACTLY did I do that got the computer infected --- well, usually you hit a GREY area there. I hear lots of "might have been", "hard to say", "can't be certian, but I THINK it was this file (which came from where ?)... If the computer repair guy doesn't really know, how can the victim be expected to know what they did and not repeat it... ?
Being in IT for many years, I have come to realize that many people don't know why/how they get infected and educating them and teaching them good habbits on how to avoid infections goes a looooooooong way.
I don't like to recommend any antivirus myself, mostly cuz of what T said, there are horror stories for all of them.... and they'll make your suggestion come back to make you look like an ass.
I WILL however tell you what I've used (doesn't mean its good) ... NOD32 and Kaspersky PURE (currently). If you ask me why, I'll simply point you to the websites I frequent and have you make YOUR OWN educated opinion.
Hope that helps ...
