Steam Update/Games deleted?

Well there was another update today and I have all my games back, they all work now

Logged in to steam today and got the problem again so I restarted my computer and it worked like normal

Weird. I'd open a ticket with Steam about it.

To make this more hairy I forgot to mention that when launching steam it placed a load of files and folders on my desktop as it was updating. These are the ones located in my Steam folder (all the .dll files and appcache, public, steamapps folders etc.) I think they are the old ones that should be overwritten but for some reason it dumped them on my desktop instead.

Thats why I typically back-up my game files as soon as i get a game and save it onto a dvd or external hdd incase anything happens, i dont have wait hours to download all over again.

I got the update, rebooted and didnt have any trouble. I run Vista.

The problem is now solved!

What I did was delete everything in the Steam folder except for steamapps and steam.exe, restarted my pc and then launched steam via the .exe in main folder - not from a pre-existing shortcut. I then let steam update and everything works now. So if anyone else ever gets this problem try doing that ^^

I'm not sure what caused it go weird but it's sorted now
