So you've got your permit. We've got basically the same system here in the states. For NC: You take a written driving exam, about 100 questions, then do practical driving with an instructor (think you have to log 8 driving hours or something like that over 3 days) and you get your permit, where you have to have your parents or another adult who's had their license for 5+ years. After having it for 12 months, with no discrepencies, you get your limited driver's license where you can drive from 6 AM to 9 PM, with the exception of driving to/from work/school, unless you have an adult who meets the same standards during the off hours (9 PM to 6 AM). After having that for 6 months, with no discepencies, you get your full license. All of this can be done by the time your 16 1/2 years old, if you have all your ducks in a row.

In Quebec your written test has 64 Questions!!!??? In Ontario, its a simple 10 multiple choice and 10 Identify what the road sign means.

    Re: driving exam

:icon_eek: Good God, 100 questions, Don?! Jeez when I got my permit I had about 30 questions on a computer and gave them my SSN and one of my parents signed and BINGO! I have my permit. I only missed like 3 questions (the max you can miss and still pass is 7). With the learner's permit I can drive from 7am to 10pm and I have to have a licensed adult over 21 in the passenger seat.

For the restricted license, you just have to hold the permit for 6 months, accumulate 80 hours of driving including 10 in nighttime, and be at least 16 then you get your restricted license. The funny part about the driving hours is they don't make you prove it; your parents just have to sign off on it. the restrictions on this are: you can only have one person under 21 in your car(excludes siblings for school), unless there is at least 1 person over 21 in your car. and you can drive between 6am and 11pm.

at 17 you can get your unrestricted (basically the same thing as your adult license). then when you become 18 you can get your adult license.

    BTW this is for Tennessee

Congrats bro! Here is a tip. Speeding, although sometimes fun, is WAY over rated. And try not to do too many things while driving. I don't know if it is illegal to use your cell phones while driving by you like it is for my state (NY) but I would advise against it. Be careful but also don't hesitate. You'll be great bro. Driving can be very fun but God forbid an accident comes it is very very depressing. Especially when its another person's car (considering you have your permit and won't have your own car yet). Have fun my man!

Thanks guys, i think im going to have lots of fun driving.

oh and Nemesis, driving and talking on your cell phone here in Quebec is also illegal. But one thing americans dont have (i think) is that here we can do right turn even if the lights are red (and if theres no sign saying your not allowed to).

No we're allowed to do that depending on the state, and if there isn't a sign saying that you can't.

lol well in California it's illegal to drive and talk on the phone, but the governor Arnold Schwartzenegger's wife got caught by reporters talking on her cell while driving. Arnold said at a press conference after that, "I will take care of this situation." yeah right rofl :icon_rolleyes:

I think there are only 2 States in the US that you CAN'T TURN right on red... AFTER you come to a COMPLETE STOP first. Can't remember the 2 though. All my kids were ALLOWED to get their permits and license AFTER THEY WERE 18 YEARS OLD!! I DID NOT want them on my auto insurance.. If they caused an accident .. I could be SUED, for EVERYTHING I own..... because they were minors and the parent is responsible for THEIR actions :icon_exclaim: :icon_exclaim: . I didn't work all my life to loose it all, over a 17 year olds auto ccident. :) PJ's
