It will ask you to put your full install disc (your old windows disc) in the drive shortly after it starts so you can prove you have one, then it will ask you to remove the disc and put the upgrade disc back in, then it will take off and do a clean install.
*UPDATE* I am wrong, at least as far as Vista is concerned. I bought a full version so didn't know they had disabled that feature, however there might be ways around it if you google it. I found something that claims it is legal but does break the EULA. The site is well known and respectable. That is all I will say.
Yes for the first time your installing the OS you can to a clean install...BUT if you need to reformat your computer later in the future, YOU WILL NEED to install another OS before 7 to upgrade from. Sorry my explanation probably wasn't that clear.
I thought you needed the OS already installed prior since it contain many of the same core files, didnt think you could put the old disc in while you were installing from scratch...this is propably easy for more advanced users, not basic users like many of us.
Anyway lets not try to make this more confusing for anyone

The most important question to ask Eyerock is:
Which version do you want? Home Premium is probably the best bet for the casual PC owner.
